Ben Hostetler

Ben is an undergraduate at SIUC studying journalism due to graduate in 2011.  Ben has been writing for himself for years, but he is otherwise unpublished. Ben is an avid rock climber, and outdoor enthusiast.  His project this semester surrounds one the greatest sets of bouldering problems that southern Illinois has to offer, The Standard.

Bouldering is simply climbing without the ropes, or the height. Climbers find problems in the rock face, set a goal, and learn the moves it takes to "top-out" a problem.  It takes practice and repetition to form the muscle memory it takes to dial in and stick each hold.

Located in Giant City, many local climbers frequent this tough piece of rock multiple times a week.  Some have been coming to the rock for years, and can do every problem on the face with awe inspiring ease.

The Standard can be found in Giant City's "Devil's Standtable" hiking trail.  Look for this sign that marks the trail.    Just go left at the beginning where the path forks and you walk right under the roof of the infamous "Standard".

Connor Sullivan attempts to top out The Standard. Two more moves and he's got the problem

The book is called Sandstone Warrior written by Matt Bliss, it provides directions to 12 great spots, including The Standard, and depicts routes and gives advice for these beautiful rocks.
